All Welcome

A Century of Weddings - Festival Weekend 2008

What a splendid weekend! Beautiful dresses, fabulous flowers, scrumptious refreshments, magnificent music, glorious gardens, uplifting worship – and the sun shone for us!

The weekend began on the Friday with a visit from the children of Harling Primary School and continued with a steady stream of visitors during the full four days. The gorgeous dresses in the Church, dating from 1900 to the present day, were enhanced by displays of flowers arranged in the style of the era depicted. Across the road at the Youth Centre were more dresses and displays of photographs and wedding memorabilia from Harling residents.

Wedding music was played on the Organ during the afternoons and the Bells were rung; all of which must have brought back memories to the visitors.

There were 3 special Services in the Church over the weekend. On Saturday evening a service of Thanksgiving for marriage was held at which 5 local couples renewed their vows and afterwards celebrated with families and friends in the marquee with champagne and a delicious wedding cake.

Sunday morning saw us celebrating Holy Communion with the Bishop of Norwich, the Rt Rev’d Graham James and later the Choir sang Choral Evensong with the Rev’d Heather Potts; a fitting conclusion to the weekend’s events.

None of this would have been possible without the months of hard work and preparation put in by the Church’s Events committee and many others besides.

It’s impossible to name everyone but Sue Dolling (and Mike) with Val Dangerfield (staging and time line), Chris Tagg (flowers) and Judy Walls (refreshments) deserve special mention. Also all the arrangers, shifters of pews and staging, ‘gofers’, cooks and washers up, bouncy castle attendants, publicity agents, grass cutters, stewards, bell ringers, cleaners, choir and organist, etc, etc, - not forgetting the Events committee!

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH.

Junior Church

Harling Church was packed for the Service of Thanksgiving for the work of Caryll & Richard Brown on Sunday 6th July. Scores of past and present Sunday Club members, Thursday Clubbers, parents and helpers met to say a Big Thank You to the Browns for their leadership and care for over 30 years. Former Rectors, Canon Derek Price and the Rev’d John Handley took part in the service and paid their own tributes to Caryll & Richard and to Caryll’s mum, Lilian Bulkeley, who also was involved with the Junior Church in the 1970s. The children presented Caryll & Richard with a beautiful collage depicting each of the current members, plus a big bouquet for Caryll.

There was a lot of catching up going on during the magnificent Tea which followed.

Caryll & Richard are now handing over the leadership of the Sunday Club to others – see below.

Floodlighting

ST PETER & ST PAUL’S CHURCH, EAST HARLING, FLOODLIGHTING

Since its inception there have been a multitude of favourable comments about the effectiveness of the floodlighting and how it enhances the community generally.

However there have been a number of understandable concerns expressed relating to how the church, while openly admitting to be short of funds can afford to install and run floodlighting.

Hence a brief word of explanation. The cost of the installation was funded totally by donations and bequests, both from church members and the wider community. This money having been donated for a specific purpose could not be diverted to routine running costs. The lighting used is the latest in eco-friendly and running costs are less than £3.00 a week during bleak mid-winter, when they are on longest, to £1.50 a week during summer.

The sponsorship of the lighting for special occasions more than covers the running costs and serves as a significant fund raiser.

We are extremely grateful to all sponsors past and future and to those whose donations that enabled the project to be undertaken initially. Hopefully this will enable everyone to enjoy the lights for many years to come.

Mike Wise, Church Warden.

You are invited to sponsor the floodlighting of St Peter & St Paul’s to help with the day-to-day running expenses of our parish church. You can choose to commemorate a personal event, an anniversary, or any other special occasion. Alternatively you can simply make a donation. For the month of June the lights will be on between dusk and midnight. A night’s floodlighting costs £5. Please make cheques payable to “East Harling PCC”. .
